How much should an 8-week-old eat?My 8-week-old, 10 1/2-pound daughter eats only 2 to 4 ounces of formula at every feed. I try to space her feeds out to about every three hours, but sometimes she wants to eat every one to two hours. She will not eat more than the 2 to 4 ounces each time. How much should she be eating each time and how long should she wait between feeds? She only sleeps two to three hours in a row at night, and every reference I find says that once she weighs 11 pounds, she should sleep through the night.

Hungry Days Every few weeks you may experience a day or two of unusual crankiness when your baby is hungrier than normal and can't seem to get enough milk, no matter how much you feed him. This is probably the result of a growth spurt. You might be tempted to supplement his feeds with formula, but don't. Breastfeeding is all about supply and demand, and those feeding frenzies are exactly what your body needs to stimulate an increase in your milk production.

We are planning to travel out of the country with our 8-month-old baby. Is it safe to use bottled water (without boiling first) to mix her formula? What should we do if we are unable to find bottled water? We can't afford to carry cartons of premixed formula.

Weaning Clues Does your little one seem interested in your food? Does she turn away if you offer her the tip of a spoon or open her mouth ready for a taste? From the age of 4-6 months, most babies will start to display certain behaviours that indicate they are keen to expand their diet. The Department of Health advice is that you wait until 6 months before weaning. This often coincides with the appearance of first teeth.

My 7-week-old daughter was on a high-iron formula, but it gave her a lot of wind - she was grunting and constipated - so we switched formulas. Everything was fine for about a week, but now she's grunting and having a hard time with her bowel movements again. Should I change formulas one more time?

My breastfed daughter is 5 months old. Because we have a history of asthma on both sides of the family, I don't want to start her on solids until she's between 7 and 8 months old. When I mention this to people, I get some funny remarks. Is it wise to delay introducing solids?

Is it too early to spoonfeed our baby if he rejects the spoon? Our GP told my wife and me to start our 4-month-old on cereal, but he won't take the spoon. It ends up being a frustrating experience for all of us. My wife and I usually give up and put the cereal right into the bottle and finish it off that way. Is it too early to start him on a spoon or are we not giving him enough time to adjust?

My 4-month-old baby has breast milk as well as formula. He started to teethe two weeks ago. Lately he doesn't want to feed from the bottle unless he's lying down on the bed. Is this harmful for him? Will it cause oesophageal reflux or middle ear infections? He doesn't even like being propped up when being fed.

On our doctor's advice we changed our baby's formula from one with iron to one low in iron. The high-iron version seemed to bother his stomach. Now that he is 4-months-old, should we switch to a normal iron formula? His stomach has been fine ever since we made the change.

We have a 7-week-old baby girl who seems to have problems with her bowel movements. Since birth I believe that she has only evacuated three times on her own. The doctor recommended that we give her half a teaspoon of corn syrup if she had not had a movement for two days, and if that did not help her, to use half a paediatric suppository on the third day. He now has us using baby lax on the fourth day. Is this normal for a breastfed baby? Is there anything we can do to help her evacuate on her own?
