Bathtime Basics Newborns don't get very dirty and should not be bathed too often as exessive wetting can lead to dry skin. But it's important to get your little one used to water so that she develops a liking for baths and, one day, for swimming too. Remember that she will pick up on tension in your movements if you're not feeling confident about bathing her, and this may cause her to develop a fear of water.

Spotty Bottoms Does your baby suffer from nappy rash? Redness and spots are caused by the enzymes present in urine. These are more active when combined with faeces so prolonged wetness in combination with faeces can exacerbate the problem. The best way to prevent sore skin is to keep your baby dry by frequent changing. If his skin is getting red, try letting him have some time each day without a nappy on. But remember to lie him on a towel or an open nappy in case of accidents!

My 7 1/2-month-old baby had five red bumps appear about 10 days ago. They disappeared a few days after she got them. Then yesterday she woke up with the exact same five bumps. This time they look and feel like ant bites, but the first time they were flat. They are in exactly the same place as five days ago. I have never had an insect bite reappear. What could they be?

Water Baby Bathtime is an important part of children's bedtime routines. But at this age, your little one doesn't need a bath a day. Too much water can actually dry out the skin so bathe your baby only when necessary. At this age the most important area to keep spotless is the nappy area. Baths are more about getting your child used to enjoying water.

My 10-month-old daughter scratches her skin in the lower-back and buttock area like mad when getting into a warm bath. I use an ultra-sensitive baby wash that I squirt into her bath water. I can feel small bumps on her skin and try to stop her from scratching and pulling at the area, but until she has finished in the bath, the area is very red and irritated. She has left marks on her skin and would probably scratch until she bled if I let her. What do you suggest?

My son has a light-coloured ring around his mouth. When he has his dummy in, it covers the discoloration perfectly. I'm concerned about how I can get his normal skin colour to return. There doesn't appear to be any discomfort or redness, and his skin is smooth to the touch. Could it be that he's sucking too hard?

My 5 1/2-month-old daughter has cradle cap on the sides of her face. She no longer has it on her scalp. Her GP confirmed that the sides of her face have cradle cap. He suggested washing it with the rough end of a flannel with a gentle, moisturising soap. I have done so for months, and she still has it on her face. The doctor advises that there is no prescription to help this condition. I am desperate to clear this up. Please help.
