How to prepare your home for a crawling babyHands-Free Baby Sitting up allows your little one a whole new perspective on the world. At 8 months, he's starting to sit unsupported and will quickly progress to reaching forward and sideways, and finally twisting round. His hunger to explore is insatiable and freeing his hands is an important step towards independence. Encourage his curiosity by placing a small selection of toys within reach. But keep it to two or three items at a time – too much choice will overwhelm him.

Safety Check Burns can happen when you least expect them to, so it's worth remaining vigilant around the home. Young skin is much more sensitive than adult skin and can burn more easily. This is why sun protection - in the form of total block or Factor 30 at the very least - must be applied to any exposed areas on warm days. But water temperature, hot radiators and cooked food can also pose a burn hazard to your toddler.

My husband and I have a 6-month-old daughter and a dog. Until recently our family pet either ignored or enjoyed the baby. But now that she's mobile he growls whenever she crawls near him. Though he's never bitten anyone, I'm afraid he's going to nip her. What can we do?

I have a concern/question about bumper pads. My 5-month-old son woke up crying because he had pushed his head underneath the bumper pads. I immediately took them off because of my concern for his safety. The pads do not tie at the bottom, only the top. Please assure me I did the right thing. Now I'm concerned about him bumping his head.

A Baby-Safe Home Though most babies begin crawling at around 8 or 9 months, some get moving earlier. So it's worth preparing your house for those inquisitive little hands. Indoor plants need to be raised out of reach if you don't want your baby eating mouthfuls of earth! Electrical items, plugs and wires must be made safe, and cupboard doors need securing.
